| History |
In 1998, the Ford Foundation East Africa Office commissioned work to explore the idea of self-reliance and community-led and resourced development. This work was occasioned by the need to reduce dependence on foreign aid. Called the Africa Philanthropy Initiative (API), the work involved research, focused discussion, and debate on sustainability of development efforts by stakeholders throughout Africa . The efforts resulted in important ideas, initiatives, and institutions, including Ufadhili Trust, that champion the cause of local resource mobilisation for social development. Ufadhili’s
distinctive niche is based on one of the greatest
challenges that confronts the civil society
sector. That of raising adequate resources to
support development work. Ufadhili promotes and
facilitates collaborative links within and among
communities, individuals, and local businesses to
increase efforts in pooling resources together
from various local sources.
