Social Reporting Engagement

Since 2003 upto date, Ufadhili has been providing valuable input into the FIRE Awards, which is an annual event on financial reporting organised jointly by the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK), Nairobi Stock Exchange (NSE), and the Capital Markets Authority (CMA). Ufadhili gives lead technical support to the FIRE Awards in the development of its social reporting component. The organisation has also served as evaluator of various companies’ annual reports.

Meetings

Ufadhili Trust held the 1st CSR Seminar in March 2003 at the Intercontinental Hotel.
Ufadhili partnered with
Traidcraft, a UK-based NGO, to conduct a two-day workshop for NGO leaders in Kenya in 2004. The workshop discussed how NGOs can work with the corporate sector.

In 2005, Ufadhili developed and launched a CSR Kit in three East African countries; Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda . In Kenya , Ufadhili partnered with the Kenya Private Sector Foundation to launch the publication. .(KPSF), in Uganda with the Federation of Uganda Employers, Uganda Investment Authority, and the Institute of Corporate Governance of Uganda, and in Dar-es-Salaam with the CEO Round Table.

We have widely distributed the kit, which offers a useful guide for business involvement in the community.  Following a presentation made before 250 delegates at the Annual Meeting of the Kenya Association of Hotel Keepers and Caterers (KAHKC), Ufadhili Trust received several requests for technical support in CSR. We held a follow-up training on cause-related marketing in partnership with KAHKC in 2006.

Research
Ufadhili collaborated with UNDP in the launch of the Global Compact Programme in Kenya . UNDP had earlier requested Ufadhili to conduct a baseline study, The Status of CSR in Kenya, for the programme.
CSR Forums
The CSR Leaders’ Forum was launched in 2006 targeting business leaders. Ufadhili endorsed the idea of a leaders’ forum at the inauguration and tasked the organization to facilitate quarterly forums in partnership with key business leaders. In September, AAR hosted the second leaders’ forum, which focused on safety in the workplace.
Conferences

The East Africa CSR Conference took place from 29th November to 1st December 2006. Representative from all three East African countries attended. The event included over 30 corporate presentations, a debate on responsible media, and cocktails.  The Business in the Community (BITC) invited Elkanah Odembo, the then Executive Director of Ufadhili Trust, to participate at the BITC CSR Awards in London . BITC is the initiative of the private sector in the UK . Its main aim is to promote CSR among UK companies. Some 700 or so companies attended the annual event, which HRH, Prince Charles graced. BITC is keen to work with and support Ufadhili Trust in pushing the CSR agenda further in the region.
