Local Resource Mobilization Highlights

In the last 5 years, Ufadhili Trust successfully convened regional conferences on Philanthropy and Volunteerism. This includes the 1st ever regional conference on Philanthropy and Volunterism held at The Kenya School of Monetary Studies in July 2003. Four other subsequent regional meetings have been convened.
Recognition
In 2002, Ufadhili hosted the first ever East Africa Community Service Awards to recognise individuals and companies that have excelled in community service in the East African region. Subsequent annual awards have been presented. To date, 45 recipients have been awarded this prestigious award.
Advocacy and Policy Development
Ufadhili was a key collaborator with the Ministry of Gender Culture and Social Services on the development of a National Policy for Social Development. The National Policy is…….Ufadhili successfully conducted workshops to disseminate the draft policy in the Coast, Central, Eastern and Rift Valley provinces. 

Regional Training and Meetings

Ufadhili has been involved in regional trainings and meetings on Local Resource Mobilization, Volunteer Management, Strategic Planning and Effective Communication for Non-profits.  

More than 200 organizations have attended trainings organized by Ufadhili. Another 50 some organizations have received direct technical assistance.
Case Studies
Tanzania
Ufadhili conducted a one-day workshop on resource mobilisation and sustainability for the partners of Bernard Van Leer Foundation in Dar-es-Salaam. 30 organisations from East and Southern Africa participated.
Ufadhili convened a task force of volunteer-Involving Organisations (VIOs). The task force was set up to strengthen VIOs and widen the impact of volunteerism in Kenya , Uganda , and Tanzania .

Tax Incentives
The year 2002 saw the completion and circulation of a study into the Kenyan Tax Regime and Its Impact on the Unanalysed: The Role of the Legal Tax Framework in Promoting or Constraining Local Philanthropy. The study also contained a comparison of best practices in other jurisdictions. Ufadhili used the findings to stimulate discussions within a working group, comprising representatives from government, corporate, and non-profit sectors. Dialogue focused on the need for an enabling tax environment for philanthropy. The Tax Incentive Initiative aims at bringing a wide range of stakeholders together to harmonise their efforts and to collaborate in the establishment of a more enabling legal and policy framework for giving
Harambee Taskforce
Ufadhili in the following year presented written proposals to and made oral submissions before the Task Force on Harambees. The task force adopted the proposals, which included provisions of tax incentives for contributions to charitable organisations, in its final report.
National Policy for NGOs
For about two years after the proposal was submitted, Ufadhili participated in the efforts leading to the final draft of the National Policy for NGOs. As a result of government’s approval of the session paper, CSOs started to advocate for the development of a comprehensive and facilitative law for NGOs in Kenya .
16th Annual International Fellows Philanthropy Conference
The Centre for Civil Society Studies-Johns Hopkins University (USA) in partnership with; Institute of Development Studies (University of Nairobi), the National Council of NGOs (Kenya), International Council for Social Welfare, the Development Network of Indigenous Voluntary Associations (Uganda), and the Tanzania Gatsby Trust, Ufadhili Trust hosted in Nairobi the 16th Annual International Fellows Philanthropy Conference in 2004. The theme of the gathering was Enabling Legal and Policy Environment for the Nonprofits: Ensuring Impact and Value to Society. Over 100 civil society practitioners and experts from East Africa and 30 other countries around the world took part in the deliberations that led to the Nairobi Statement available online at <http://www.jhu.edu>, which Kenyan civil society can use as a platform to advocate for a more enabling environment.
Social Justice Philanthropy Study
Ufadhili Trust successfully completed social justice philanthropy research. The purpose of the study conducted in 2005 was to analyse how funding organizations apply their philanthropic resources to address social injustices and inequalities. The study was part of a larger project conducted simultaneously in four other countries around the world: India , Indonesia , Chile , and the United States of America . The organisation conducted dissemination of the study in New York , Beijing , and Budapest .
Occasional Social Justice Paper Series
Ufadhili convened a round table focusing on decentralised funds as a tool for the mobilisation of local resources. Following the activity, Ufadhili prepared Occasional Social Justice Paper Series No. 1 on Decentralised Funding. It is available on the Ufadhili Trust website <http://www.ufadhilitrust.org>. 
Mapping of institutions involved in Social Justice
Ufadhili carried out a mapping exercise of institutions involved in advocating for social justice at the Coast Province and in Western Kenya . A total of 65 organizations were identified.. Ufadhili is developing a virtual social justice map, which will inform grant makers what social justice initiatives are taking place in Kenya . The map will also enable social justice actors to network with each other for learning and greater impact.
The East Africa Community Civil Society Organizations Forum
The East Africa Community (EAC) CSO Forum elected Ufadhili Trust to serve on its national steering committee. The forum integrates civil society’s participation in and engagement with the East Africa Community.
Citizens Assembly

The Citizens’ Assembly (CA) is an initiative by a group of CSOs keen on creating a platform for citizens to voice their concerns and seek viable, people-led solutions to social, economic, and political issues. The CA believes that we can only realise our society’s potential for social transformation if we empower citizens to express their concerns and participate in the generation of solutions to problems.

CA Caravans
During the 2005 referendum on the proposed new constitution for Kenya , CA organised countrywide civic education using “Wanjiku Caravans”. The caravans comprised mobile teams from CA who held public rallies to conduct civic education on the proposed constitution. In total, the teams covered approximately 75% of the key administrative centres in Kenya . The teams also held public debate sessions. The underlying principle of the caravans was to help citizens make an informed decision during the referendum.
CA Meetings
Ufadhili provided fundamental support in the planning and facilitation of the National Dialogue Conference on the Constitutional Review in 2006.
Issues Covered
As a convenor of the Citizens’ Assembly, Ufadhili hosted four critical public debates on
1) The Kenyan parliament
2) Tribalism and the development of Kenya

3) The draft land policy, and

4) The bill on political parties.

Social Reporting Engagement
Since 2003 to date, Ufadhili has been providing valuable input into the FIRE Awards, which is an annual event on financial reporting organised jointly by the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK), Nairobi Stock Exchange (NSE), and the Capital Markets Authority (CMA). Ufadhili gives lead technical support to the FIRE Awards in the development of its social reporting component. The organisation has also served as evaluator of various companies’ annual reports.
Meetings

Ufadhili Trust held the 1st CSR Seminar in March 2003 at the Intercontinental Hotel.  

A year later, together with Traidcraft, a UK-based NGO, and Ufadhili conducted a two-day workshop for NGO leaders in Kenya on how to work with the corporate sector.

Ufadhili developed and launched a CSR kit Kenya , Tanzania , and Uganda in 2005. In Kenya , we organised the launch in collaboration with the Kenya Private Sector Foundation (KPSF), in Uganda with the Federation of Uganda Employers, Uganda Investment Authority, and the Institute of Corporate Governance of Uganda, and in Dar-es-Salaam with the CEO Round Table. We have widely distributed the kit, which offers a useful guide for business involvement in the community.  

Following a presentation made before 250 delegates at the Annual Meeting of the Kenya Association of Hotel Keepers and Caterers (KAHKC), Ufadhili Trust received several requests for technical support in CSR. We held a follow-up training on cause-related marketing in partnership with KAHKC in 2006.

Awards won
At the annual conference and exhibition of Kenya Private Sector Alliance, His Excellency, President Mwai Kibaki, presented Ufadhili Trust with a trophy for best exhibit on CSR work.
Research
Ufadhili collaborated with UNDP in the launch of the Global Compact Programme in Kenya . UNDP had earlier requested Ufadhili to conduct a baseline study, The Status of CSR in Kenya, for the programme.
CSR Forum
The CSR Leaders’ Forum was launched in 2006 targeting business leaders. Ufadhili endorsed the idea of a leaders’ forum at the inauguration and tasked the organization to facilitate quarterly forums in partnership with key business leaders. In September, AAR hosted the second leaders’ forum, which focused on safety in the workplace.
Conference

The East Africa CSR Conference took place from 29th November to 1st December 2006. Representative from all three East African countries attended. The event included over 30 corporate presentations, a debate on responsible media, and cocktails.  

The Business in the Community (BITC) invited Elkanah Odembo, the Executive Director of Ufadhili Trust, to participate at the BITC CSR Awards in London . BITC is the initiative of the private sector in the UK . Its main aim is to promote CSR among UK companies. Some 700 or so companies attended the annual event, which HRH, Prince Charles graced. BITC is keen to work with and support Ufadhili Trust in pushing the CSR agenda further in the region. 

Other Achievements

Ufadhili has generated and disseminated significant CSR information and materials to business associations and individual companies.  

We have developed various modules for CSR training, distinguishing ourselves as a leading organisation in the CSR arena.

We offer workshops and seminars to train private sector managers on the essentials of CSR and how to make it a part of the business strategy.
